Autism Assessment

What We Do: At The Delta Clinic we aim to transform and enhance the lives of children, adolescents and adults diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Delay, Intellectual Disability and AD/HD by providing a wide range of services to assist them and their families.

Diagnostic Assessment: Our highly qualified team investigate the possibility of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Delay, Intellectual Disability and AD/HD. The assessment typically involves gathering a detailed developmental history, completing standardised assessments with the child/adolescent/adult and liaising with other professionals that work closely with the individual. A written report is given and a feedback session conducted to assist families in creating a treatment plan. Early diagnosis means that intervention can begin as soon as possible; research suggests that the earlier treatment begins in life, the more positive the outcomes for that individual. A diagnosis may also allow individuals to gain better access to support in the community and financial assistance.

Cognitive Assessment: Cognitive assessments allow schools and parents to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of the child’s intellectual functioning.  Many schools require children to complete a cognitive assessment before beginning school, to help determine what level of support is required. Cognitive assessments are also useful for adolescents and adults, if an individual needs extra assistance at work, TAFE, or the HSC. A written report is given with useful recommendations.

Behaviour Support: Behaviour Support assists parents and staff, by providing a better understanding of why behaviours of concern are occurring. Clinicians teach how to create an environment that reduces the likelihood of these behaviours’ occurring and also outline a consistent way to respond to these behaviours. Multiple assessments and observations, a comprehensive plan and parent/staff training are completed to ensure a holistic approach.

Individual Therapy: For families requiring support and advice we offer ongoing appointments. Therapy is individually tailored and a treatment plan created. Common issues explored in therapy include social skill development, emotion management, developing concentration and attention skills, parent/staff training, improving sleeping and eating habits and developing self-esteem.  Cognitive behaviour therapy is typically used.

Group Therapy Programs: The Delta Clinic offers a range of group therapy programs during the school term and school holidays. These programs address various topics including emotion management, social skills, school readiness, self-understanding and mindfulness. Research suggests that group programs are an effective way to enhance children’s learning and success.

Home, School and Workplace Visits: Clinicians are able to visit individuals home, school or workplace. This allows clinicians to better understand the individual’s needs whilst also communicating important information and practical strategies to the people that work closely with the individual.

Rebates: Medicare rebates are available. Clinicians provide services under the Helping Children With Autism Initiative and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
